Elusive Geometry is a set of photographs made with the electronic musician The Reverse Engineer (who is also my brother, Dave!). They sit alongside his album of the same name and reflect on the stories we build for ourselves, cling to and eventually let go of.
Rather than make artwork on a screen, I treated the images as a live analogue performance. In the studio I built temporary sculptures from geometric planes, reflective card and intersecting forms. As the tracks played, I moved, balanced and collapsed them, photographing in real time. The approach owes something to László Moholy-Nagy’s Light-Space Modulator, a kinetic sculpture built to throw light for the camera. I used multiple exposures and lighting techniques to turn something moving into something static.
The photographs catch the moments when a structure briefly holds: split seconds where light, movement and geometry lock into focus before falling away. It borrows the same tone as the music, building a story from fragments and watching it stand, if only for a moment.
